WASHINGTON (AP) — A memorial service will honor the life of Watergate figure-turned-evangelist Charles Colson.
Colson died April 21 at the age of 80. He was President Richard Nixon’s special counsel and served a prison sentence for a Watergate-related conviction. But he spent the last half of his life as a dedicated Christian evangelical who founded what grew into a large prison ministry.
Thursday’s memorial service will be at the Washington National Cathedral and will be webcast live on the cathedral’s website.
Family members and former Minnesota Gov. Albert Quie are scheduled to speak at the service.
Colson, a former Marine, was buried last month with full military honors at Quantico National Cemetery.

Guam News –
Guam News
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo has announced that the House Armed Services Committee has now passed the 2013 national Defense Authorization Act. It will now be considered by the full House of Representatives before moving onto the Senate.

House Armed Services Committee Passes National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 Bill must be considered by the full House of Representatives
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 9, 2012 – Washington, D.C. –
Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today announced that the House Armed Services Committee has passed H.R. 4310, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013, by a vote of 56 yeas to 5 noes. The bill now moves forward for consideration by the full House of Representatives next week.
H.R. 4310 authorizes and sets policy for the Department of Defense for fiscal year 2013. All provisions supported and sponsored by Congresswoman Bordallo in the Readiness mark were also included in the Chairman’s mark; you may review these provisions on the Congresswoman’s website.
In addition to these provisions, the Congresswoman sponsored an amendment that strikes an additional requirement in section 2207 of the FY12 NDAA on the certification of tangible progress on a Futenma Replacement Facility in Okinawa. The revised military build-up agreement between the Government of Japan and the U.S. Government, which de-links progress on the FRF from the Guam realignment, makes this certification moot. The Chairman’s mark also fully authorizes, for appropriation, all military construction on Guam totaling $101.9 million. Other notable amendments included in the mark provide for an additional $25 million for the Readiness and Environmental Protection Initiative (REPI) for a total of $75 million in funding. It also provides for $983,000 for the Navy Sea Cadet Corps program.
During the full committee’s consideration, the Congresswoman successfully led the effort to defeat an amendment to lift the current A-76 moratorium, which would allow contractors to perform functions currently performed by federal civil service workers. She also expressed her concerns about a provision to prohibit the retirement of the Ticonderoga class cruisers, which will hinder the Navy’s ability to invest in future ship capabilities.
“The House Armed Services Committee today favorably reported its version of the FY13 NDAA to the full House,” said Congresswoman Bordallo. “This bipartisan legislation reaffirms our commitment to ensuring that our men and women in uniform are fully resourced and capable of carrying out their missions. Further, this bill fully authorizes all military construction projects on Guam, including an authorization for a fuel cell hangar project at Andersen AFB that was not authorized in Fiscal Year 2012. Most importantly, this bill includes several provisions that will enable the military build-up to move forward in a timelier manner that builds on recent progress with the realignment. The mark removes an additional requirement included in section 2207 of the FY12 NDAA on the certification of tangible progress on a Futenma Replacement Facility in Okinawa. This provision will help enable the Department of Defense to move forward in spending and obligating funds already received from the Government of Japan as well as military construction funds authorized by the FY12 NDAA.
“I successfully led the effort to defeat an amendment that would have lifted the A-76 moratorium. The amendment would have not held the Department of Defense is accountable for an inventory of service contracts, which is critical to improving personnel management in the department. I also have concerns about the amendment to continue the costly Ticonderoga cruiser program. With a tighter budget, it is important that we target the needs of our military more effectively. This bill will be considered by the full House of Representatives next week, and I encourage my colleagues in the House to support this legislation.”

Celebrated the first week of May since 1985, Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) is time set aside to honor the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees and ensure that our government is the best in the world.
Throughout the country, mayors, governors, communities and public service organizations participate in PSRW by issuing proclamations; hosting award ceremonies and special tribute events; and delivering messages about the value of public service.
In Washington, D.C., feature events include a public town hall meeting with Cabinet secretaries and a congressional breakfast to announce the finalists of the 2012 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals.
Public servants deserve our thanks throughout the year and we invite you to continue honoring them for the work they do each and every day. Ideas range from sending messages of thanks to holding appreciation events to highlighting employee accomplishments on your website or newsletter. For additional suggestions, please download our How to Celebrate PSRW Guide.
Letter from the 2012 PSRW Co-chairs
2012 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America finalists announced
Marking the start of Public Service Recognition Week, the Partnership announced this year’s Sammies finalists—outstanding federal workers who are making high-impact contributions critical to the health, safety and well-being of Americans.
“The Service to America Medal finalists epitomize the true spirit and value of public service,” said Max Stier, Partnership President and CEO. “Their stories showcase the good that our public servants do each and every day behind-the-scenes on behalf of the American public.”
The finalists’ achievements range from medical and scientific advances for amputees and the treatment of diabetes in children, to helping disadvantaged Americans file their taxes and saving hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars through smart procurement practices.
